This flamboyant style maven not only adores fashion, but enjoys dressing up too.
Sabrina Maingard lives and breathes fashion, and while she’s talking, she’s sizing you up. Literally. While studying fashion at the then Natal Technikon, Sabrina was peer of celebrity designers Terrence Bray and Abigail Betz. In this stellar company, she clinched the first Durban July Young Designer Award, followed up with the best Construction in a Range at the third-year Tech fashion show, and in 1995, sewed it up with a coveted invite to join the Designers Guild.
She began her career in commercial fashion and traveled abroad, specializing in trend forecasting for chain stores. In 2001, she launched a signature label under her maiden name, Roselli. She began supplying a number of boutiques and appeared on the sought-after designer hangers at YDE.
She then qualified as a professional make-up artist in 2005, took a sabbatical from design work and hosted the Brazillian Trunk Show at Quarters Hotel in Durban for three years. This led to her becoming a personal stylist, or ‘Fashion Nanny’, as she describes herself.
‘I was chatting to women with a quirky approach to fashion and somebody compared me to Fran Drescher from The Nanny sitcom,’ she laughs. ‘The name Fashion Nanny popped into my head.’
But Sabrina says fashion is as much about fun as a personal statement: ‘I love helping women to see the lighter side of fashion.’
